Official British visa photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA UK visa photograph may be captured at a visa application centre or provided through the UK Immigration: ID Check app when your route allows it. For the app portrait, UKVI asks for even lighting and a plain, light-coloured background. Prepare that space before opening the camera so you can concentrate on the face rather than adjusting the room mid-capture.
The image should include your head, shoulders and upper body. Keep the head straight, look towards the camera and leave the eyes open and visible. A neutral expression is required. There should be no other people, objects or shadows behind you, and nothing should cover the face or eyes. Religious and medical head-covering exceptions are addressed in the official guidance.
The visa application tells you whether to use the app or attend a visa application centre. At a centre, the photograph and fingerprints form the biometric enrolment step; uploading supporting documents is a separate task. Children under five also attend for their photograph, although they do not provide fingerprints. Follow the instructions for each applicant rather than assuming one family member’s route covers everyone.
The facial photograph is separate from a photograph or scan of your passport’s details page. Our biometrics overview explains that distinction. If the visa service directs you to an appointment, follow its capture instructions instead of assuming a saved digital portrait replaces the session. Check the photo request issued for your own application before preparing the final image.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
