Official German passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA German Reisepass connects the holder’s identity to a travel document used at international borders. The biometric portrait is part of that identity record, so the photograph and the way it reaches the passport office both matter. Inside Germany the application is handled by the competent passport authority; overseas, a German mission’s checklist governs the consular appointment. Preparing the image for that actual route avoids ordering a format the office cannot receive.
Look at the whole portrait before concentrating on small details. Does the head sit naturally upright? Is the face recognisable on both sides? Compare the image with the German examples rather than choosing the most flattering selfie. Our facial expression guide helps with the pose, and the background explanation helps you spot distractions around the outline of your hair.
For a child’s German passport portrait, use the child examples rather than forcing an adult crop. The sample board allows different face proportions and certain age-related deviations. Leave time for another capture if needed: repeatedly enlarging a blurred frame will not restore facial detail. Our photo quality guide can help you assess the original before selecting it.
Delivery depends on the passport office. Inside Germany, photographs use the secure digital process introduced in 2025. German missions abroad issue their own instructions; the US missions currently request two identical recent biometric prints. Confirm that final delivery route while preparing the photo so your chosen portrait can actually be received by the issuing office.
The embassy and consulate directory is useful when a German passport is being requested outside Germany, where local photo-delivery instructions need particular attention. For travel after issuance, the visa finder helps investigate the destination independently of the German passport appointment.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
