How Renap Records the Face on Guatemala’s DPI

The Documento Personal de Identificación, or DPI, is the personal identity document administered by RENAP in Guatemala. It supports civil and administrative identification and also serves qualifying domiciled foreign nationals. The photograph belongs to the person’s registered identity record, so the application combines documentary checks with capture of biometric information.

RENAP’s published procedure describes reviewing the applicant’s documents and personal details before capturing fingerprints and the facial image. This sequence is useful preparation for a first application: bring the appropriate identity documents, and make sure any discrepancy in the record is addressed through the service rather than assuming the photo appointment can correct it.

The agency’s 2025 card-design announcement highlights a colour photograph as part of the updated DPI.
