Keeping the Photograph on Malawi’s National ID Recognisable

A national identity card in Malawi is intended to remain recognisable as its holder’s document. The National Registration Regulations explicitly address a photograph that no longer provides a recognisable image, alongside incorrect personal particulars and expiry, as a reason for replacement. The portrait’s usefulness is therefore part of maintaining the identity record, not just a concern when first registering.

The National Registration Bureau explains that renewal and replacement involve completing the required forms again so changing details such as residence, occupation and marital status can be recorded. Updating the portrait belongs within that administrative request rather than being an informal change to a printed card.

Prepare a recognisable likeness and keep the supporting identity documents consistent with the details supplied to the Bureau. Reviewing photo quality, framing and facial expression before the photograph is recorded helps with the image stage. Our biometrics guide explains the photograph’s relationship to the wider registration record, and the detailed guidance below provides visual checks. Ordering prints does not itself replace an identity card: follow the NRB registration or replacement process so the current image and particulars are associated with the correct person. Preserve the existing card as instructed while the official replacement is handled.
