Official Mexican residence permit photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationThe photograph on a residence document in Mexico belongs to the immigration record handled by INM. A July 2025 simplification agreement changed an important part of that process: for the listed document-issuance procedure, the authority captures the images digitally instead of asking the applicant to supply the previously required three small prints.
The same measure combines renewal, exchange and replacement under the document-issuance procedure. This matters when preparing your identity documents: an older checklist may describe a print delivery that differs from the current office capture. Keep the instructions for your particular INM case with your appointment material.
The agreement specifies a visible forehead and ears, without earrings or eyeglasses for the capture. The photo requirements below provide photo detail, and our facial expression guide helps with a comfortable direct portrait. Staff direct the official framing, while the biometrics explanation shows why the image is linked to the residence record.
A residence card should also be distinguished from the Mexican visa that may precede it. Our visa finder can support initial research, and the embassy and consulate directory helps locate a Mexican representation for consular instructions abroad. Once your case reaches INM, follow its residence-document guidance rather than reusing a visa-photo checklist without checking. The photo quality guide remains useful background, but the collecting authority determines how the image is obtained.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
