Official New Zealand visa photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationNew Zealand’s visa photo guidance places particular emphasis on a natural, unaltered image. Prepare the lighting, backdrop and pose before pressing the shutter. Immigration New Zealand does not accept photographs that have been modified to change facial features, smooth the skin or place the person against a digitally substituted background.
For an online application, the published format is a JPG or JPEG in a vertical 3:4 ratio, with a file that meets the upload service’s size limits. Use a recent photograph taken within six months. Frame the face centrally and look directly at the camera, with a neutral expression and closed mouth. A photograph of an existing printed photograph is not an appropriate source image.
The background guide can help you choose an uncluttered setting before capture. Check your phone’s camera settings for automatic beauty filters, and turn them off rather than trying to reverse their effects later. Our facial expression explanation is useful when deciding whether a relaxed pose has become a smile or a slight head tilt.
Immigration New Zealand uses the photograph as biometric information to establish or verify the applicant’s identity and assist the visa decision. A photo that cannot be accepted may lead to a request for another image. Paper applications use a printed portrait with instructions on the form, while NZeTA requests are online. Select the requirements for the route you actually use.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
