A Recognisable Portrait for Panama’s Cédula

The cédula de identidad personal links a person’s civil record with an everyday identity document in Panama. Panama Digital describes the card as carrying the holder’s photograph alongside identifying details, signature and validity information. First issuance is handled through the Tribunal Electoral. That context matters when preparing the portrait: it should identify the person accurately within a formal civil-registration process, not merely resemble an informal profile picture.

Choose the correct service before gathering documents. First issuance, renewal, a replacement after loss and a change of name are separately described procedures. The public service pages direct applicants to the Tribunal Electoral, and the photographic arrangements should be confirmed for the selected transaction. Do not assume that a quick reprint necessarily involves a fresh portrait, or that a first application can be completed by supplying prints alone.

Panama’s published photograph provisions emphasise visible facial features and reliable biometric recognition. Use the photo requirements below to prepare a current recognisable likeness, suitable facial expression and clear framing. The photo quality and background guides help explain why a visually simple image is useful for identification. Bring the required identity documents or civil records and compare the details carefully during the application. If your purpose is to update the image as well as replace the card, explain that when selecting the service so the office can direct you to the appropriate procedure.
