Your Portrait in Sierra Leone’s Civil Identity Record

The national identity process in Sierra Leone begins with civil registration and the assignment of a National Identification Number, or NIN. The National Civil Registration Authority explains that registration is carried out in person and includes the photograph, fingerprints and personal information. The image therefore becomes part of a foundational record used to identify the individual, rather than simply a printed picture attached to an isolated card application.

The NCRA asks applicants to present an identification document for initial registration and to verify the personal details entered by the registration officer. Take time to check those details before confirmation: an accurate portrait and an accurate name or birth record need to refer to the same person. The authority’s card programme distinguishes national, ECOWAS and non-national identity cards.
