A Current Portrait for Your First Singapore Identity Card

Singapore’s identity card registration combines personal particulars, a photograph and biometric enrolment. Citizens and permanent residents must register when they reach fifteen, before their sixteenth birthday. For this first registration, ICA requests a digital colour portrait taken within the previous three months, so an older school photograph may no longer meet the recency condition.

The image should show the applicant clearly enough to connect them with the registered identity. Review the photo requirements below alongside the framing, facial expression and photo quality explanations. Use an uncomplicated background and preserve a natural likeness; appearance-changing filters are unsuitable for a document intended to establish who its holder is.

For pupils at government and government-aided schools, ICA organises biometric enrolment through the school. Applicants outside that arrangement, including those who miss the school session, complete the online registration and arrange an ICA appointment. The portrait submission therefore does not replace the enrolment stage. Keep the requested student identification available for verification.
