The Portrait Captured for Your Somali National Identity

The Somali National ID is administered by NIRA for citizens and legal residents of Somalia. Registration creates a personal record supported by identity proofing and biometric capture. NIRA explains that the applicant’s photograph and fingerprints are collected during this process. Preparing a portrait is therefore different from uploading an ordinary profile image: the face becomes part of the official identity record used when the credential is checked.

NIRA provides both document-based and testimonial identity proofing. Applicants may present evidence such as birth, passport or educational documents; where the required documents are unavailable, the published process allows a qualifying registered witness to help establish identity. This distinction is useful because a photograph cannot prove all biographical details by itself. Keep the supporting identity documents consistent with the information entered during registration, and resolve spelling or date errors before accepting the record as correct.
