The Photograph Within Uruguay’s National Identity Card

Uruguay’s Documento Nacional de Identidad, also familiar as the cédula, uses the holder’s portrait as part of a protected identity record. The design presented in June 2026 illustrates how important that image is: it includes a tero-shaped security feature over the main photograph, a secondary picture on the reverse and a laser image showing the portrait and birth year from different angles. These features protect the finished card; they are not effects an applicant should add to a photograph.

A clear portrait therefore matters beyond the large picture visible on the front. Preparation should preserve a natural recognisable likeness, with useful facial detail, even lighting and no beauty filters. The Dirección Nacional de Identificación Civil manages this document in Uruguay. Its renewal guidance requires the holder to attend the booked appointment personally; children under fourteen attend with an adult holding valid identification.
