Clear Shots: Understanding Passport Photo Visibility and Quality Criteria

Official passport photos have specific visibility and quality guidelines to ensure that the photo accurately represents the applicant without any distractions or obstructions.

Here are the key visibility rules that you should keep in mind when taking a passport photo:

• Face Visibility: The applicant's full face must be visible and facing forward. Profiles or angled views are not acceptable.
• Expression: A neutral expression is required, with both eyes open and mouth closed. Smiling or frowning can distort facial features, so these are usually not permitted.
• Eyes: The eyes should be clearly visible, not covered by hair or eyeglass frames. Reflections on glasses can also be a problem, so it's recommended to remove glasses if possible.
• Head Coverings: Head coverings are generally not allowed except for religious or medical reasons. Even in such cases, the head covering cannot obscure any part of the face, especially from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both edges of the face.
• Resolution and Quality: The photo must be in high resolution with no shadows, glare, or red-eye. The background should be plain and light-colored to contrast with the face and hair.
• Recent Photo: The photo should be recent, typically taken within the period required by the issuing authority, to accurately reflect the applicant's current appearance.
• Clothing and Uniforms: Uniforms should not be worn in passport photos, except religious clothing that is worn daily. Otherwise, everyday clothing is preferred.
• Digital Alterations: No digital alterations or retouching should be done to enhance or change the appearance.

Document-Specific Requirements

Exact dimensions, head proportions, background colour, and measurement units depend on the selected country and document.
