There is plenty to smile about. Just save the biggest grin for after your passport photo. For Dutch passports and Dutch ID cards, the official photo guidance calls for a neutral expression and a closed mouth.

A photo stop can be a small part of a day out, rather than a trip across the country. Start with the city where you live, work or have your document appointment, then narrow the search to an address that fits your route. And if you arrive by bike, give your windblown hair a moment to settle before facing the camera.

From Amsterdam’s Canals to Rotterdam’s Skyline

Begin with the major cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Their different settings are a good reminder that “in the city” is not an exact address: a canal-side stop in Amsterdam and a visit across Rotterdam need different planning.

The Hague combines city life with a North Sea coastline, while Utrecht’s canals give its centre a character of its own. Further afield, you can also open the city pages for Eindhoven and Groningen. A photo taken in the Netherlands is not automatically for a Dutch document: tell the photographer the issuing country and bring the instructions for your application.
