Official Australian visa photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationFor an Australian visa, a portrait may be requested as an uploaded image or captured during a separate identity check. The useful starting point is the photograph request attached to your own case. Home Affairs’ Australian Immi App, available to eligible applicants, captures a live facial image rather than using a previously saved passport-style photograph.
For that live capture, choose a light-coloured wall with no objects behind you. The app provides an oval to guide the position of your face and captures the image when the device is correctly placed. Keep your eyes open, face the camera directly and check that nothing covers your eyes or facial features. Avoid shadows rather than trying to correct them afterwards.
Home Affairs tells applicants which personal identifiers they need to provide. At a biometrics collection appointment, staff use a digital camera for the face and a scanner for fingerprints. The photograph requested in a document checklist is not necessarily the same step as this identity check. Keep the letter for your application available so you can distinguish those requests.
Eligibility for the app is indicated by a biometrics letter with a Visa Lodgement Number starting AUI; other applicants may be directed to a collection centre. If a separate upload is requested, use that field’s file instructions. Our biometrics overview explains why the face image can be collected independently of a passport scan.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
