Deciding Whether Your Belgian Driving License Needs a New Portrait

For a Belgian driving license, the image already held on an identity document can be part of the card-production process. A new license request is therefore a useful moment to check which portrait will be reproduced. If it no longer resembles you, clarify the appropriate photo route before ordering the card rather than after collecting it.

This makes the likeness of the stored photograph worth reviewing early. If you want a different image, ask the municipality about the appropriate route before the card is produced. The City of Brussels, for example, asks for one recent photograph on a white background when the picture on the identity card or residence document no longer resembles the applicant.

For that new portrait, make the background genuinely even rather than relying on a pale wall with a visible shadow. Choose a current individual image and review facial expression before capture. A photograph of the identity card itself is not the same thing as a fresh portrait: it can contain glare, printed security features and reduced detail.
