A Recent, Relaxed Likeness for Your Belgian Eid Portrait

The Belgian eID is an electronic identity card with a visible photograph used to recognise its holder. The federal identity service identifies an outdated likeness as one reason a card may need replacement. When preparing a new eID, choose a portrait that represents the person now rather than preserving an image simply because it appeared on the previous card. Your municipality’s instructions determine how that photograph accompanies the identity-card request.

The official criteria describe a closed mouth, no visible teeth and no pronounced smile or frown. Neutral does not need to mean tense. Review the chosen frame afterwards rather than assuming every picture in a short series has the same expression.

The head and facial contours should remain visible. The identity service recognises medical or religious exceptions for accessories, while still requiring visibility of the eyes, chin and face outline. Check the actual portrait against those criteria rather than treating any head covering as an automatic problem. The background should be light, plain and free from shadows under the published guidance.
