A Recognizable Face on Cuba’s Identity Record

The carné de identidad is part of everyday identification in Cuba. The Cuban system also includes a minor card and a separate identity document for foreign residents. The U.S. Department of State’s document guidance distinguishes these records, which is useful when preparing a photograph for a particular person rather than ordering an unspecified identity-card image.

The guidance describes cards linked to a national database containing digitized photographs, fingerprints and signatures. It identifies Interior Ministry offices as the document service. The portrait therefore works alongside recorded personal details and other biometrics, helping connect the physical card to its holder.

For a new or replacement image, a recognizable likeness is more useful than an especially flattering picture. Keep the face unobstructed, preserve natural skin detail and use a relaxed facial expression. The issuing office’s checklist determines whether it needs a supplied photograph or collects the image during the service. Read its photo requirements before arranging prints, and bring the requested supporting identity documents. For a child, identify the minor-card service explicitly: the child’s record and the parent’s own identity card are separate documents.
