Official Finnish ID photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA Finnish identity-card application uses a photograph to connect the card with its holder’s verified identity. The police’s application guide begins with an electronic portrait and a photograph retrieval code. That code is attached to the online form, allowing the authority to retrieve the correct image without treating it as an ordinary email attachment.
Submitting the form online and proving identity are separate parts of the process. Some applicants must visit a police station to provide further information or identification. Follow the instructions issued for your application and keep the requested identity documents available, rather than assuming that possession of the photograph code means the card is already approved.
The picture should present a clear, current likeness. Review the photo requirements below alongside our framing, background, facial expression and photo quality explanations. The police’s identity-card photo guidance also describes using an electronic photograph at a service point, so the same submission mechanism can support different application routes.
The Finland page helps distinguish Finnish identity cards from passports and residence documents. Applicants abroad can use the embassy and consulate directory to locate a mission and its service arrangements. If the card is intended for travel, research the actual destination through the visa finder and confirm acceptance of the particular document before relying on it for the journey.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
