Official Finnish residence permit photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA Finnish residence-permit photograph becomes the identifying image associated with the immigration application and card. Migri requires a recent passport photograph meeting the police standards, including a front-facing view and neutral expression. An old image from a previous application is not automatically suitable for a new request simply because Migri already has it.
The current service-point instructions for Mariehamn describe bringing a photograph or retrieval code when the image has not already been attached in Enter Finland, or when applying on paper. They also list the passport and original supporting documents. This shows why photo preparation and the identity-verification visit should be organised together.
Review the photo requirements below with our framing, background, facial expression and photo quality explanations. Keep a current likeness, and retain the retrieval code where that route is used. The code links the portrait to the file; it is separate from scans of the identity documents and evidence supporting the residence category.
Our Finland page connects related Finnish documents, while the visa finder helps distinguish entry planning from residence administration. The embassy and consulate directory provides consular contacts for applications involving a mission abroad. Enter Finland indicates whether the particular online application requires a service-point visit, so follow that outcome rather than assuming that every renewal has the same identification steps.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
