Keeping the Eyes and Facial Outline Clear on Your French ID Photo

The French carte nationale d’identité carries a portrait intended for identity checks over the life of the card. France’s public-service guidance asks for one recent, recognisable photograph when applying for it. That makes a new card application a useful moment to reassess an older image rather than simply reusing spare prints. Prepare the portrait through the accepted photo service and keep it with the identity-card documents requested by the office receiving your application.

Your eyes must remain open and clearly visible. A fringe should not cover them, and glasses must not introduce reflections or hide the eyes behind a heavy frame. France allows you to take the picture without glasses even if you normally wear them. Pay equal attention to the outline of the face. Earrings and piercings are acceptable under the official guidance when the facial features remain distinguishable. If you are renewing an older card, use the current appearance requirement rather than choosing a familiar photograph simply because it appeared on the previous document.
