Icelandic Residence Permit Photo

From Residence Approval to Your Icelandic Card Photograph

A first residence permission in Iceland and the production of its physical card are connected but separate stages. The Directorate of Immigration explains that the card is ordered after the required conditions have been completed, including photography and notification of residence, together with a medical examination where applicable. The portrait is therefore an important part of making the approved status usable as a personal document.

For the card photograph, attend the Directorate of Immigration by appointment or use a District Commissioner outside the capital region. The appointment guidance asks you to bring your passport. That allows the image being recorded to be checked against your existing identity documents, rather than relying on a portrait file with no supporting record.

Some permit categories also request a supplied photograph among the application documents. Keep that initial checklist distinct from the later card-photo appointment. A recognisable likeness is useful at both stages, and our guides to portrait, framing, facial expression and photo quality explain how to prepare. The detailed requirements below provide the appearance checks.

Before arrival, follow the instructions attached to your approval, including any entry-visa arrangements. Our visa finder helps you explore that separate travel question, and the embassy and consulate directory can locate the relevant representation if a mission is involved. Preparing the image is only one part of completing the residence record; check the Directorate’s instructions for your actual category before assuming the card will be issued automatically.
