Official Irish passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationAn Irish passport application made online needs a digital photograph, whether you are requesting a passport book or passport card. The Passport Service accepts several ways of obtaining it: someone can take the photo at home, a photo provider can supply a file, or a participating booth can provide a photo code. Choose the route that lets you submit a clear original image.
The online service’s initial acceptance of the file is followed by review. That means a successful upload is not the final decision on the photograph. Keep the original available and watch for any request to provide another image while the application is processed.
Prepare a recognisable likeness and use our portrait, framing, facial expression and photo quality guidance to assess the result. The detailed requirements below cover the visual criteria. When taking the image at home in Ireland or abroad, have another person hold the device rather than using an arm-length selfie, as the Passport Service specifically distinguishes those methods.
Paper applications use a different delivery process, including identical prints and witness endorsements on selected copies. Check the instructions for your chosen route before assembling the file. Our digital delivery format guide helps distinguish a digital image from a print submission, and the embassy and consulate directory can locate Irish representation for overseas questions. Keep supporting identity documents separate from the new portrait so each part of the application is easy to identify.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
