Live Facial Capture for Jamaica’s National Identification Card

The National Identification Card gives citizens and eligible residents of Jamaica a way to establish their identity when accessing services. NIRA’s enrolment process includes live capture of the facial image and fingerprints. The card photograph therefore comes from the enrolment record; a picture prepared for a passport application does not replace this appointment step.

Online registration begins the process and allows an appointment to be booked. At the enrolment centre, the required personal information and supporting records are checked before the card is issued. Bring the relevant identity documents and civil-registration evidence, including any records explaining a change of name. Residents must also satisfy the agency’s requirements concerning their immigration status.

The image will appear on the front of the card alongside key identity details. Preparing a clear portrait means being ready for a straightforward identification photograph, with a natural recognisable likeness and unobstructed face. Our guides to facial expression, framing and photo quality explain the visual principles, while the detailed checks below help you prepare for the camera at the centre.

NIRA describes enrolment as voluntary and the initial card as free. Its biometrics are used for identity assurance, alongside the verified personal record. Treat the appointment as the creation of that record, not simply a photo-printing visit. The photo preparation instructions can help you arrive prepared, but the agency controls capture and determines which supporting documents are needed for your particular enrolment.
