Uploading the Photograph for Your My Number Card

The My Number Card provides a photo-bearing identity card in Japan, with an online application route that includes registering the applicant’s facial image. The official service allows smartphone applicants to take the picture during the application or upload an existing suitable file. This makes preparation possible before the card-collection stage, provided the image meets the service’s checks.

The online process starts with the application ID and email registration. A dedicated link then leads to photograph registration and the remaining application information. Keep the image separate from scans of other identity documents; the required upload is a portrait of the applicant, not a photograph of a passport or another card.

Choose a current recognisable likeness and leave enough space for correct framing. The official photo guidance warns that an image can make the application incomplete if it is too dark or cannot be cropped appropriately. Review photo quality, background and facial expression before exporting in the requested digital delivery format. There is an important age exception: the official online instructions state that applicants under one year old do not need to register a facial photograph, following the change introduced in December 2024.
