Japanese Visa Photo

Preparing the Portrait for the Japanese Visa Route You Need

The photograph in a visa application for Japan belongs to the entry-clearance request, which is separate from a Japanese passport or a residence-card application. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs applicants to the Japanese mission handling their case because supporting documents depend on the purpose of travel and local circumstances. Establish that route before choosing the photo output.

Photo quantities can also depend on the application category and nationality. The Ministry’s spouse-or-child-of-a-Japanese-national guidance, for example, lists one photograph generally and two for the nationalities specified on that page. This is a reason to use the applicable checklist, rather than treating a print count from one visa category as a rule for every visitor.

Use the visa finder to explore the relevant category, then locate the receiving mission through our embassy and consulate directory. Prepare a current recognisable likeness that matches the applicant identified in the passport and form. Review the portrait for photo quality, suitable framing and a clear facial expression; the detailed specifications below explain the image checks. Supply prints or a digital file according to the actual service being used.

For long-stay routes, a Certificate of Eligibility may form part of the supporting file, but it does not remove the need to follow the visa-photo instructions. Keep the photograph separate from copies of that certificate and other identity documents. Organising the image around the correct application avoids confusing entry-clearance paperwork with the residence procedures that may follow after arrival.
