The Face Behind Slovakia’s Electronic Identity Card

The Slovak občiansky preukaz combines a visible identity record with electronic functions. When applying for this card in Slovakia, the applicant normally has their face, fingerprints and signature recorded. The portrait therefore belongs to the card’s enrolment appointment, while electronic certificates and access codes serve a different purpose. A useful photograph proves who is holding the card; it does not itself activate an online identity service.

Applicants abroad can consult the relevant Slovak mission about issuing an ID card. The consular guidance explains that processing through a mission cannot simply be accelerated in the same way as an urgent domestic application. Plan the appointment around the whole identity check, including the documents establishing the details to appear on the card. Use the embassy and consulate directory to find the correct office instead of mailing prints to an unconfirmed address. Your supporting identity documents and the captured portrait need to refer to the same current personal record.
