The E-Fotograf Reference Behind a Slovenian Passport Portrait

For a passport application in Slovenia, the photograph now has a reference as well as an appearance. Since April 2026, the standard domestic process uses a digital photograph entered through an authorised e-fotograf. The applicant presents its reference number so the issuing office can retrieve the image. A correctly cropped digital photograph and a reference registered in the official system are therefore different things; make sure the service preparing your photo provides the submission route your application needs.

This system concerns how the portrait reaches the passport record. The face still needs to provide a recognisable likeness, with the facial expression, background and framing suitable for an identity document. Our photo preparation guide explain how to prepare for that image, while the detailed photo requirements below cover its visual characteristics. Keep the reference confirmation with the other application papers so it is available at the appointment rather than only stored on someone else’s phone.

There are special arrangements for applications abroad and exceptional circumstances, so ask the issuing mission which evidence to bring instead of assuming every overseas appointment follows the domestic handover. Use the embassy and consulate directory to locate that office. An existing official photograph may also be reusable when it still accurately represents the applicant and the authority can retrieve it. That decision belongs to the issuing office; simply possessing an old passport picture does not establish that it is the image available for the new passport record.
