Preparing for the Portrait on a South African Smart ID

The Smart ID card places the holder’s photograph within South Africa’s national identification system. When arranging an application, distinguish the Smart ID service from passport processing even if the same Home Affairs office offers both. The card is used for identification; its application should be prepared around the identity record and the capture arrangements for that particular service.

Home Affairs explains that applicants using eHomeAffairs must visit a branch for their photograph, fingerprints and signature to be captured or verified. Completing the preliminary application does not replace that visit. Before attending, check the selected office’s instructions and make sure the appointment relates to the Smart ID service you need.

The portrait should show a clear, recognisable face. Read the photo requirements below and the guidance on framing, background, facial expression and photo quality to prepare for the picture. A natural likeness matters more than a flattering pose or decorative presentation. Where capture takes place at the office, preparing your appearance is different from choosing a file to upload.

Keep the requested identity documents and application information together so the photograph can be associated with the correct record. Our South Africa page links to other South African document guidance. If you are abroad, the embassy and consulate directory can help you locate the relevant representation and check which civic services it offers. Do not assume that every overseas mission or participating domestic branch handles the same Smart ID transactions.
