Preparing for the Portrait at Your Swedish Passport Appointment

Swedish passport applications bring the identity check and portrait together at a police passport office. Swedish citizens can apply at any passport office in the country, with an appointment arranged in advance. The photograph is taken there, so preparing for this stage means knowing how your face should appear and bringing the identification needed for the application.

The police require applicants to attend personally, including children. For applicants under 18, consent from all guardians is part of the process. An adult resident applying in Sweden should bring valid identification and the existing passport if it is still valid. These documents establish the record to which the new portrait will be attached.

Our photo requirements below explain the photograph’s role and composition. Review framing, facial expression and background so you understand what a clear identification image needs. The aim is a natural likeness with reliable photo quality, rather than a posed travel or profile picture. Follow the passport officer’s capture instructions during the visit.

The Sweden page links to guidance for other Swedish documents, which can have different photo-submission methods. If you apply abroad, use the embassy and consulate directory to find the responsible Swedish mission and its local appointment information. Keep your identity documents organised before the visit, then consult the visa finder for destination research once planning the journey. A new passport supports international travel, while the entry conditions for each destination still need their own check.
