Official U.S. passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationThe photograph in a passport issued by the United States links the travel document to the person presenting it at a border. Preparing that image is one part of assembling your identity documents; the other is choosing the application route that fits your circumstances. A first passport, a mailed renewal and an eligible online renewal do not all receive the photograph in the same way.
The Department of State asks for a color photograph taken within the previous six months; printed photos use a square format. Prepare your portrait. The photo requirements below explain the composition and measurements, so use this introduction to plan how the finished image will reach the passport service. A recognizable likeness is the aim, whether the application needs a print or a digital photograph. Our guide to taking a passport photo helps you prepare before selecting the required output.
For a printed application, keep your photograph with the application material and follow the form’s attachment instructions. Online renewal instead guides you through an image upload. If you are applying while abroad, the U.S. representation serving your location provides the local instructions; our embassy and consulate directory can help you find it. Check that office’s checklist before ordering extra copies.
A passport establishes your travel identity, but your destination may require a separate visa. Use the visa finder to explore that next step and verify the destination’s instructions. Preparing both documents together can be convenient, provided you check the visa photo separately rather than assuming a passport image meets every submission rule.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
