Official U.S. visa photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA visa for the United States is applied for separately from the passport issued by your own country. The photograph identifies the visa applicant within that application, so begin with the visa category and the U.S. embassy or consulate handling it. The visa finder offers a starting point for travel research, while the consular instructions determine what you actually submit.
For the DS-160 online application, a digital photograph is normally uploaded while the form is completed. If the upload fails, the confirmation page indicates that a printed photo is needed. This is why it helps to keep your original image available as well as any requested prints; the submission route matters alongside the appearance of the photograph.
The Department of Stateโs photo guidance expects a recent, recognizable portrait. Consult the photo requirements below for the detailed checks, including background, facial expression and photo quality. The general guidance calls for a photograph taken within the last six months against a white or off-white background. Check the resulting file as well as the original: a technically accepted upload still needs to represent you accurately.
Find the relevant representation through our embassy and consulate directory, then read its appointment and document instructions. The visa photograph accompanies your application; it does not replace the passport or other evidence requested for your category. Keep the submitted image with your application records so that any later request for another copy can be handled consistently.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
