Portrait Preparation for Vietnam’s Electronic Passport Abroad

Vietnam’s overseas missions began accepting applications for ordinary passports with electronic chips in April 2026. The embassy in the United States describes a process that starts with the Foreign Ministry’s online declaration and continues with a visit to the mission for document submission, photography and fingerprints. The photograph is therefore part of a wider biometric identity record, alongside the evidence establishing Vietnamese nationality and residence abroad.

The embassy’s published checklist also asks for two recent white-background portraits. Prepare those requested prints carefully while recognising that the appointment includes a separate photographic step. Use a current recognisable likeness, a suitable facial expression and clear framing. Review photo quality on both the digital photograph and any paper copies, without applying filters that change facial features. The background should support an unobstructed view of the face rather than compete with it.

Keep the image and declaration associated with the correct applicant’s identity documents, including the previous passport where available. A family’s applications may involve different supporting records and representative details, so do not merge their photo files. The detailed photo requirements help with preparation, while the receiving mission determines the submission and appointment arrangements. Use the embassy and consulate directory to find that office if you live outside Vietnam, and follow its current electronic-passport guidance rather than an older checklist for a different passport format.
