Canadian Visa Photo

A Photograph Within Your Canadian Visitor-Visa Application

A Temporary Resident Visa for Canada is a different document from a Canadian passport. The photograph identifies the foreign national applying to visit, and its submission belongs to that visa process. Start with the instructions attached to your application, using the visa finder for initial travel research rather than treating a passport-photo specification as a complete visa checklist.

IRCC’s printed visitor-visa photo specification uses a print frame meeting its minimum size. It publishes dedicated visitor-visa photo requirements. It calls for a recent, clear portrait, and the detailed section below helps you check the image itself. The facial expression and photo quality guides explain useful aspects of a recognizable photograph without replacing the official instructions for your application.

For printed submissions, IRCC’s specification describes matching photographs supplied with the application. An online account can instead request a digital photograph, so check which output is needed before ordering prints. The photograph accompanies the other requested identity documents; it is not a substitute for a passport or supporting evidence of the proposed visit.

If an embassy, consulate or visa service gives you additional instructions, read them alongside the application checklist. Our embassy and consulate directory can help you identify the relevant Canadian representation. Keep the submitted image and its original file with your records so a later request for another copy is easier to handle. Check any new photo request on its own terms, especially if your application moves to a different stage.
