Hong Kong Passport Photo

The Source Photograph Behind an Hksar Passport’s Engraved Image

The Immigration Department explains that a photograph supplied for an HKSAR passport is personalised on the data page by laser engraving. The finished image therefore depends on the quality of the original. For an application in Hong Kong, selecting a clear portrait is part of preparing the actual passport record, not simply filling an upload box.

Eligible applicants can use the online service, while submission kiosks provide their own options for taking or scanning a photograph. Other routes include office or postal arrangements where applicable. Choose the route first, because the digital delivery format of the image differs even though the person must remain recognisable in every version.

Use a current recognisable likeness and check photo quality, framing and background against the detailed specifications below. Preserve the original portrait before exporting the requested file. The Department expressly notes that successful upload does not itself confirm that the photograph is acceptable; it may request a replacement after assessment.

For paper submissions, protect the prints from folds, staples and other marks that can affect personalisation. Keep them with the correct application and supporting identity documents. Online submission also remains separate from collection: the Department’s guidance requires personal collection of the passport, with additional arrangements for children. If applying overseas, confirm the selected Chinese diplomatic or consular mission’s role in receiving or delivering the document rather than assuming all offices offer the same service.
