A Clear Identity Portrait for Hungary’s E-Szig Card

Hungary’s electronic identity card, commonly called e-SZIG, combines everyday identification with proof of Hungarian citizenship. Its electronic storage includes the holder’s photograph, and Hungarian missions provide an application service for eligible citizens abroad. The portrait is therefore part of a national identity record, not merely a picture attached to a local membership card.

Photo submission can depend on the consulate. The embassy in Tel Aviv asks applicants for a recent supplied photograph, whereas Luxembourg’s guidance specifically requests a supplied photograph for children under six. Follow the instructions for your appointment in Hungary or overseas instead of transferring a checklist from another mission.

A recognisable likeness is especially useful on an identity card presented repeatedly over time. Check the portrait for natural facial detail and consult the guidance below for the exact visual criteria. Our explanations of background, framing, facial expression and photo quality help you prepare a suitable image without cosmetic alterations that change how you look.

The application also requires the relevant Hungarian identity documents and identification or address information. Those records establish the administrative identity that the photograph represents. If applying overseas, locate the responsible office through our embassy and consulate directory and confirm the attendance requirements for your age group. Keep requested prints separate from copies of your existing card so the new portrait is easy to identify among the supporting papers.
