Official Hungarian passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA Hungarian passport application brings the photograph, signature and other identity checks together at a personal appointment. For citizens of Hungary applying abroad, the consulate’s arrangements matter: the Los Angeles consulate normally takes the image during the application, while New York specifically asks families to bring a photograph for children under six. Check the office handling your application before deciding which copies to prepare.
The purpose of this portrait is to connect the traveler with the passport record. Prepare a recognisable likeness rather than a photograph chosen mainly for its flattering pose. The detailed specifications below explain the visual requirements; our guides to framing, facial expression and photo quality help you assess the image without repeating the entire checklist here.
Bring the supporting identity documents requested by the consulate. Hungarian missions also explain that foreign births, marriages or other civil-status events may need registration in Hungary when they affect the application. Resolving those details helps ensure that the name beside the photograph is the one the passport authority can record.
For a child, organise the requested prints before the appointment and keep the original image available if a replacement is needed. Use our embassy and consulate directory to locate the relevant Hungarian representation. Its current instructions determine whether your case uses a supplied photo, consular capture or an additional image requested during processing.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
