Your Photograph in India’s State-Based Driving-License Application

An Indian driving license identifies the person authorised to drive the vehicle categories shown on the document. The official laminated or smart-card license form includes the holder’s photograph, but the way that image reaches the licensing record depends on the state and the service being requested. A single upload checklist should not be treated as identical across all of India.

Parivahan’s guidance directs applicants using Sarathi to select their state before choosing the photograph-and-signature upload service. It expressly notes that availability depends on state customisation. Check the instructions shown for your application rather than assuming that uploading a document scan also completes the separate photo step.

Keep the portrait and signature as distinct items where the service requests them separately. The image should provide a recognisable likeness, with clear facial detail that survives processing onto the license. Before exporting the file, review the portal’s requested digital delivery format and image resolution. A technically accepted upload still needs to be a suitable identification image, so inspect the preview rather than relying only on a successful file transfer.
