Official Indian passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationAn Indian passport photo becomes part of the identity record used for international travel. The domestic Passport Seva process includes personal attendance at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra so the authority can obtain photographs and biometrics. Applications made overseas follow the instructions of the relevant Indian mission, which can request supplied images instead.
Age also matters. Passport Seva specifically asks applicants to bring a recent photograph for children below four years old. Preparing that image before the appointment is particularly useful when a very young child needs more time to settle. Check the applicable checklist rather than assuming that the adult and infant capture arrangements are identical.
A recognisable likeness should be the starting point for every portrait. Our framing, facial expression and photo quality guides help you assess the image, while the detailed requirements below cover the visual specifications. Preserve natural facial detail and check that the selected background is suitable for the actual submission.
Bring the supporting identity documents and other originals requested for your appointment in India. If applying abroad, find your mission through our embassy and consulate directory and check its instructions before ordering prints or exporting a digital file. Consular photographs may be scanned or reproduced in the booklet, making the original image quality important. Keep a clear original available, but let the application route determine how it is delivered.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
