Official Indian visa photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationThe Indian e-Visa application asks for two different visual records: a recent front-facing photograph of the applicant and the passport page containing personal details. The first shows who is applying now; the second records the travel document that will be used. Uploading the passport page into the photograph field does not provide the intended identification portrait.
Before preparing files, confirm that the e-Visa route is appropriate for your nationality and purpose of travel to India. Other Indian visa applications can follow mission-based procedures with their own instructions. Our visa finder helps you explore that starting question, and the embassy and consulate directory can locate a representation when the application needs consular handling.
For the portrait, use a recognisable likeness with clear facial detail and the required background. The detailed photo specifications below explain the appearance checks. Our framing, facial expression and photo quality guidance helps you prepare the image before exporting it in the portal’s requested digital delivery format.
The official e-Visa guidance asks applicants to review personal details and the uploaded self-image before final submission. Use that opportunity to check the preview as well as the written information: an unexpected crop or the wrong file can be easy to miss when several documents are uploaded together. Keep the original image available until the application has been processed, and follow any request for a replacement through the official application system.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
