Kenyan Identity-Card Photos at Home and at Overseas Missions

National identity-card registration in Kenya is increasingly supported by live-capture equipment that records personal and biometric information at registration centres. Kenya News Agency’s official reporting describes this data being transmitted to the central processing centre. Applicants abroad may follow different practical arrangements: the embassy in Washington asks applicants to attend personally and bring photographs meeting its published specifications.

Confirm the location and type of application before ordering prints. A first national ID, replacement or change of particulars can require different supporting records. The Washington service uses appointments and provides its own checklist, so that consular submission should not be assumed identical to a domestic live-capture visit.

Whether the image is supplied or captured at the centre, prepare a current recognisable likeness. Review the portrait for photo quality, suitable framing and a clear facial expression. The detailed specifications below explain the visual checks, and our photo preparation instructions can help with preparation before attending.

Keep the requested identity documents and civil records ready, including any evidence relevant to a name change or missing card. The photo connects the applicant to the national registration record; it does not replace the evidence used to establish identity and citizenship. Use our embassy and consulate directory to locate the mission responsible for an overseas application, and follow that office’s current instructions on the photograph and appointment.
