Official Malaysian passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationMyOnline Pasport gives eligible Malaysian passport holders an online renewal route that includes a photograph upload. The picture is part of the renewal application, so preparing the correct image before starting helps keep the process focused on the current holder and passport details. A file accepted by the upload screen is still subject to the Immigration Department’s assessment.
Keep this online route distinct from a first application or another request handled at an immigration counter. The Malaysian International Passport guidance sets out different supporting-document situations, including applications involving children. Your portrait should be associated with the correct applicant’s identity documents, not substituted with an image copied from the previous passport page.
Prepare a recognisable likeness and review photo quality, framing, background and facial expression against the detailed requirements below. Our digital delivery format and image resolution guides help with the digital version without losing the facial detail needed for identification. Retain the original file while the application is considered so a requested replacement can be prepared cleanly. For renewal while outside Malaysia, use our embassy and consulate directory to locate the responsible Malaysian mission and its arrangements; an overseas service may handle submission and collection differently from the domestic online route.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
