Preparing a U.S. Passport Portrait in Puerto Rico

Passport applications accepted in Puerto Rico lead to a United States passport, rather than a separate territorial travel document. The Puerto Rico Department of State provides local passport acceptance services, which makes its checklist a useful starting point when arranging your portrait. Its instructions call for a recent colour picture in the familiar square format. The image accompanies citizenship evidence and your other identity documents; it is not a substitute for those documents.

For a first application, organise the photograph alongside the originals and copies requested by the acceptance office. Puerto Rican birth certificates have their own document-version requirement: the local checklist specifies certificates issued after July 2010. That administrative detail does not change the photo requirements, but checking both parts together can prevent a second visit. A child needs an individual portrait, even when the family submits applications together.

Prepare the picture with enough space for correct framing, a clear background, and an ordinary facial expression that preserves a recognisable likeness. Review the detailed specifications below before ordering prints. An eligible online renewal follows a different submission route and uses a digital photograph; do not assume that a paper application and an online renewal require the same delivery format. Keep the original image until your application is resolved so that a requested correction does not mean reconstructing a photograph from the printed form.
