A Photograph for U.S. Special-Issuance Travel

A diplomatic passport from the United States belongs to the Department of State’s special-issuance system for authorized government travel. The applicant’s employment, destination, duties and authorization documents determine entitlement. The photograph is the identifying image within that official-travel record, so it should be prepared alongside the agency’s application material.

The published checklist requests one passport photograph taken within the last six months. Review that portrait. A recognizable likeness remains the purpose even though the passport category is diplomatic. The category should not be confused with a ceremonial or publicity photograph taken for an official event.

The application route depends on the employing agency and assignment. For DS-11, the photograph is left unattached so the acceptance agent can review and attach it. Keep requested prints with the relevant identity documents and authorization paperwork, and follow your agency’s submission instructions rather than assuming the ordinary tourist-passport route applies unchanged.

Official travel may also require a foreign visa.
