Official Dutch visa photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationThe photograph for a Netherlands Schengen visa belongs to the visa application you submit as a traveller. It is separate from the photograph printed in your passport, even though both show your identity. Use the Netherlands’ checklist for your purpose of travel and application location before deciding whether you need to bring a print or have the picture captured during the appointment.
For a tourism application where a photo is submitted, NetherlandsWorldwide specifies a colour photograph no more than six months old, measuring 3.5 by 4.5 cm, against a white or light-coloured background. Its checklist also explains that an external service provider takes a digital photograph at the appointment instead of requiring a submitted photo. Confirm which arrangement applies to the centre handling your application.
When you need a prepared image, our guide to taking a document photo helps you plan the portrait. Review your facial expression and keep a clear original rather than repeatedly compressing the file. The official checklist remains the reference for submission: making the photograph online and submitting the visa application are separate steps.
Keep the picture with the relevant travel and supporting documents, and inspect the final print for marks or damage if a print is required. Do not assume that a photo accepted for a different country’s visa will automatically match the Dutch checklist. A careful check before the appointment is simpler than discovering a size or capture-method mismatch at the counter.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
