Official Ethiopian passport photo requirements for 2026. Size, background and rules. Create a compliant photo online.
Image Created with AI for IllustrationA passport application in Ethiopia connects an online request with an in-person enrollment visit. Immigration and Citizenship Service guidance tells applicants when to attend for photographs and fingerprints, with appointment messages sent through its designated service. The passport portrait is therefore part of a verified personal record, alongside the information submitted before the visit.
The service’s appointment notice identifies original supporting identity documents, including a renewed kebele identity card, a certified birth certificate and Fayda identification. Bringing the relevant originals allows the officer to establish who is being photographed. The biometrics appointment joins the facial image to that documented identity, rather than relying only on an uploaded form.
Prepare for a clear, natural likeness: everyday appearance, unobstructed facial features and a relaxed facial expression help the capture session. Our photo quality and framing guides explain what makes an identification image useful. The office controls its capture equipment and background; a separately prepared image serves only the purpose expressly requested in your application route.
Applicants outside Ethiopia can use the embassy and consulate directory to locate the responsible representation and its passport service. Travel planning may also involve a destination visa, for which the visa finder provides a separate starting point. Keep that later photo request distinct from the Ethiopian passport enrollment appointment.
Photo dimensions must be precise to avoid rejection. The face-to-frame ratio is equally important for proper identification.
Use a plain, distraction-free background. We replace it automatically to meet official criteria.
Proper lighting ensures your photo is clear and natural. Uneven exposure or artificial glare can lead to rejection.
Your face must be fully visible with a neutral expression for easy identification and facial recognition.
Glasses are allowed only if they do not obstruct visibility. Headwear is permitted only for valid medical or religious reasons.
Improper posture can lead to application rejection. Your face and shoulders should be correctly aligned and fully visible.
